Betsy Heidenberger has been involved in the tennis industry as a junior competitor, WTA touring professional, tennis instructor, club manager, and tennis entrepreneur. She is an illuminating example of an accomplished Professional 1 rated USPTA member.
Betsy's playing background began in her junior years, where she achieved a top 50 U.S. singles ranking in 18-and-under girls. She went on to attend the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill on a tennis scholarship and received a degree in Business Administration. At UNC, Betsy played top singles and doubles positions, was named Regional All-American in 1981 and 1982, and was ranked among the top 25 in AIAW Intercollegiate singles.
Following her collegiate career, Betsy took the opportunity to use her tennis to travel worldwide by competing on the professional circuit and achieved a top 200 singles world ranking. She has been ranked No. 11 in the USPTA national singles rankings and is a four-time USPTA Mid-Atlantic Division women's singles champion. In August 2006, Betsy won the Mid-Atlantic Women's 45 Clay Court Championships. She also competes in APTA Platform tennis tournaments and had achieved a # 5 national doubles ranking. In February 2008, Betsy won the National 40's Platform Championships teaming with Jan Shelburne from Chevy Chase.
After several years competing on the road, Betsy was eager to settle back in the Maryland area remaining in the tennis business and share her enthusiasm for the sport by becoming a full-time teaching professional. In 1984, she became a member of the United States Professional Tennis Association, acquiring Professional 1 status.
In 1984, Miss Heidenberger became Club Manager and Tennis Director at the National Cathedral School Tennis Club in Washington, D.C. While at NCS, Betsy doubled the tennis membership, initiated league play, tournaments and conducted successful adult and junior instructional programs. Betsy's efforts did not go unnoticed at NCS, as she was named the Greater Washington Pro of the Year and the facility was chosen as the USTA District Club of the Year in 2000. Shortly thereafter, the courts were removed and the club was unfortunately terminated. For the next several years, Betsy had started Tennis Adventures, LLC which involved organizing tennis events, leagues, workshops, and trips.
Betsy has served on the board for the Mid-Atlantic USPTA Division as the Maryland District Representative, American Platform Tennis Association, Montgomery County Tennis Association and has been the USPTA Women's Liaison for the Mid-Atlantic Division. She is presently is serving as the Secretary on the board for the Mid-Atlantic USPTA Division. She is a Wilson Tour Ad Staff member and has also been a K-Swiss and Viking Athletics advisory staff member. She has written articles and tennis tips for Tennis magazine, USPTA's ADDvantage magazine, as well as various regional and national publications. In spring 2001, she earned the Level 1 certificate of achievement in the USPTA Career Development Program. In 2003 and in 2009, she was honored as the Maryland Pro of the Year for the USPTA Mid-Atlantic Division.
Ms. Heidenberger coached the Holton Arms High School tennis team in Bethesda, Maryland for the 2003-2004 seasons. The team went undefeated 14-0 during the fall season and ranked No. 1 in the ISL Team League Rankings. She has also been the varsity tennis coach for the Bethesda Chevy Chase High School girls' varsity tennis team during the fall 2006 and 2007 seasons.
Presently, Betsy works as a Tennis Professional at the Chevy Chase Club in Maryland coaching ladies interclub teams, private and group lessons and organizing league play. During the winter season, she works as their Platform Tennis Professional. During the summer months, she is the Director of Tennis at the CCRA Swim and Tennis Club in Chevy Chase.
While still maintaining her teaching schedule, Betsy organizes social and corporate tennis trips, outings, workshops and clinics for groups of any size, ability and interest. She organizes yearly trips to Longboat Key Resort and The Colony in Longboat Key, Florida which has been expanding every year. In January 2010, the Longboat Key Resort trip included 46 players from Chevy Chase Club, Columbia Country Club, CCRA and area tennis enthusiasts.
Many clubs and groups in the Mid-Atlantic region, as well as in New York and Florida, have called upon her to work with teams, leagues and groups - with positive results! In 2003, she organized a Pentagon Memorial Tennis Fundraiser that collected funds totaling more than $35,000 - all proceeds going toward the construction of the Pentagon Memorial, dedicated to the 184 victims, among whom was her sister-in-law, Michelle who was lost on September 11, 2001, at the Pentagon.
